Eva M. Bishop


(July 2, 1897-September 24, 1968)


Norwood--Funeral services for Miss Eva M. Bishop, 71, retired Norwood teacher, were held from the United Church of Christ, Norwood, Sept. 26, 1968, with Rev. Harry G. Myers, pastor of the church officiating. Burial was in Riverside Cemetery, Norwood.

Miss Bishop died at the Potsdam Hospital Sept. 24, where she had been a patient six weeks. She had been in failing health for the past several months.

Surviving are an adopted daughter, Mrs. Dean (Laura) Phalen, Norwood with whom she had made her home and three granddaughters, Emily, Elizabeth and Susan Phalen.

Miss Bishop was born July 2, 1897 in Oswegatchie, a daughter of Allan and Emma Burdick Bishop. She was graduated from the Gouverneur High School in 1916 and from St. Lawrence University in 1920. She taught in Cape Vincent for two years following her graduation and came to Norwood in 1922. She retired in 1964 after teaching in the Norwood High School and later the Norwood-Norfolk Central School, a total of 42 years. She taught Latin, English, French and mathematics at various times and since retiring continued as a substitute teacher.

Miss Bishop was a member of the New York State Teacher’s Association, a charter member of the Kappa Delta Sorority at St. Lawrence University and also a member of the Pi Beta sorority.
