Arthur Hayes Rites Conducted


(July 15, 1888-October 22, 1971)


Norfolk--Arthur F. Hayes, 83, Main Street, Norfolk, died Oct. 22, 1971, at the Massena Memorial Hospital where he had been a patient 24 hours. He had been in failing health for the past year.

Funeral services were held Monday morning from the Church of Visitation, Norfolk, with the Rev. George A. Lemieux, pastor, officiating. Burial was in the Church of Visitation cemetery.

Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Inez B. Hayes; three sons, Francis and John, Norfolk and Mark, Massena; one brother, Melvin, Newton, Conn.; two sisters, Mrs. Florence Williams, Lake Placid, and Mrs. Clara Bullock; 15 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Mr. Hayes was born at Potsdam July 15, 1888, a son of Wesley and Margaret Russell Hayes. He married Celia McQuade, who died in 1901. He married Inez Bond of Norfolk on Sept. 17, 1956.

As a young man Mr. Hayes worked in local paper mills and later ran a barber shop in Raymondville for five years before moving to Norfolk where he operated a barber shop for 14 years.

He was a member of the Church of Visitation and the Holy Name Society of the church and the St. Lawrence County Councils of Barbers.
