Hale Cemetery, Town of Norfolk
The sign above is located at the front of Hale Cemetery. The information that follows was provided by Leon Burnap, Town of Norfolk historian, and a group of volunteers (Theresa Dumas, Judy Huczel, Ann Todd, Clark Warner, and Marcia Wing,). They updated previous stone census information by Maud Wing and Louise Fletcher Chase (and possibly others) in October 2009. Pictures of the stones were also taken and are included here.
This cemetery is located on County Road 47 (Knapp Station-Norfolk Road), and is 1.6 miles from the SH56/CR47 intersection on Main Street in Norfolk, and 1.4 miles from the Knapp Station hamlet. (Coordinates for this cemetery are N44 degrees, 47.007 minutes and West 074 degrees, 57.447 minutes). There is a beautiful stone wall and arch which separates the old section of the cemetery (the section furthest from the road), and the new section, also called the "meadow", located closest to the road. (Since the lot numbers are sometimes duplicated in the old and new section, I prefixed any lot numbers in the new section with a "B" before the number.)
This is a very interesting old cemetery, that is still active, and with burials going as far back as 1823. I greatly appreciate the sharing of this information by Leon and the other volunteers!
